Overcoming Your Dental Anxiety
Are you nervous about visiting the dentist or having treatment? You are not alone. About half of adults experience dental phobia. But, at Link House Dental Centre in Brighton, we believe this phobia shouldn’t affect your oral health. Luckily, our specialist dentists are experienced in treating nervous patients!
We encourage you to let us know that you’re nervous. Dental anxiety can be caused by a range of things, such as the fear of pain, needle-phobia, the feeling of not being in control and previous dental experiences.
Let us know about your worries. We can prepare and make sure your visit is as stress-free as possible, from the moment you step through the door to the moment you leave our practice.
How Link House Dental Can Help
- If you are new to our practice, we welcome you to come and meet us for an informal chat and a tour.
- We will always guide you through the procedures’ steps, providing as much (or as little!) information as you require.
- We will allocate enough time for your visit so you do not feel rushed.
- We can help with relaxation techniques.
- We have TV screens on the ceilings and play music during appointments to ease your worries.
- We always use numbing gel before the delivery of the local anaesthetic.
- We can provide sedation dentistry for your peace of mind.
Sedation for Nervous Patients
We can provide two forms of sedation: oral sedation or intravenous sedation. Sedation is usually provided before delivering the local anaesthetic.
- Oral sedation is a sedative pill you take shortly before the procedure. It removes some of the anxiety associated with the visit and provides moderate sedation by dulling your senses – without putting you to sleep.
- Intravenous sedation (IV sedation) is the deepest form of conscious sedation available in dental practices. Our Anaesthetist will deliver the sedative medication and often a painkiller directly to your bloodstream (through an intravenous line). They can precisely adjust your dosage to achieve the desired level of sedation. This results in a deeper and more consistent level of sedation, allowing you to be quite unaware of the work being done. Most people who receive IV sedation fall asleep and have little to no memory of their treatment when they wake up.
What happens after sedation dentistry?
You will need a trusted friend or family member to attend the appointment and drive you home after your appointment. You should go straight home and rest while the sedative medication wears off. While most of the sedative wears off in 1-2 hours, traces of the sedative will remain in your system for 24 hours.
